SSC Helping in Haiti
Friday, 19th March 2010
On January 12th 2010 a violent earthquake struck the Caribbean island of Haiti. Sadly thousands were killed or seriously injured in the quake.
In the days and weeks following the tragedy help poured into the region from around the world. Medical help was needed most of all and many Doctors, Surgeons and Nurses travelled to the region to offer their help in healing the people of Haiti.
SSC would like to pay tribute to those who have donated their skills and time including Mr. Hannan Mullett and Mr. Richard Hanson pictured here with colleagues working in Haiti.

On Saturday December 5th the Sports Surgery Clinic welcomed more than 80 GPs to the clinic for a day of learning and exchange.
Participants were welcomed in from the cold weather by hot drinks and mince pies as we began the day with introductions from Mr. Ray Moran, Medical Director of SSC. The first session was a relaxing one as we enjoyed talks from Mr. Johnny McKenna, foot and ankle specialist (pictured barefoot below), and Mr. Keith Synnott, specialist in lower limb surgery.

There was a special treat when GAA legend Kieran Donaghy, of the Kerry Football team, joined us to discuss the players perspective on serious injury. His insight into the psychological effects of injury and recovery time reminded us all that the sports person has a totally different set of priorities as a patient.
The morning continued with lively round table discussions led by SSCs expert Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons. GPs took this opportunity to delve deeper into their experience and share case histories as ideas were tabled and methods of diagnosis and treatment weighed up. As the afternoon came upon us our invited guests were introduced to patients in two workshop sessions focusing on knee and neck injuries.

Med in Ireland 2009 took place on Tuesday 20th October. Croke Park was the appropriate setting for this showcase of Irish talent in the medical and technical arena as exhibitors met with international guests. The conference was declared open by the Minister for Trade and Commerce, Mr. Billy Kelleher. The Minister congratulated the organizers, Enterprise Ireland whose responsibility it is to “continually break down barriers innovating technology and innovating ideas”.
The event featured a series of lectures covering topics such as building start up companies, the challenges of launching innovative products and translating research to the patient. Professor Kevin Mulhall delivered a fascinating speech on “Building Orthopaedic Research Excellence” and received a warm reception from the audience who raised concerns regarding the exchange of knowledge and resource support for research in medical technology.
The presence of invited guests from Europe, the US and the Asia Pacific regions ensured that Irish companies and their products and services were on display for the world to admire. As the Minister put it; “We can talk among ourselves as a community (in Ireland) but it is important to showcase ourselves internationally. We are well capable of competing with the best in the world.”

Jerry Flannery, Luke Fitzgerald, Felix Jones, Brent Pope and well known pundit George Hook were on hand to join in the fun and games. Jerry and Luke led drills on the specially installed indoor rugby pitch and later signed jerseys and balls while chatting with their fans. They had a lot to discuss; 2009 has been an incredible year of celebration for Irish Rugby fans!
Kicking competitions, a “Strong Man” demonstration and the Scrum Clinic entertained kids of all ages throughout the day while visitors were fascinated to learn how flexible, or inflexible, they were at the Sports Surgery Clinic testing area. The SSC team helped ambitious rugby fans to improve their core stability and their gait as well as testing levels of muscle mass versus body fat and demonstrating strapping techniques to the watching crowd. Meanwhile the Sports Surgery Clinic Seminar area was packed with coaches and players who soaked up expert advice from Dr. Eanna Falvey, Mr. Niall Hogan, Mr. Tom McCarthy, Alison Quinn and Eilis Dolan. Seminars covered injury prevention, training and fitness testing techniques as well coping with hip, knee and back injuries sustained on and off the pitch. If you are worried about your fitness or have a sports injury Sports Surgery Clinic is the ideal place to get it checked out. The clinic can help with all types of injuries and have agreements with all major health insurers.
SSC was a perfect partner for the Rugby Show as the clinic has a very special link with the sport; Dr. Éanna Falvey, who spoke in the Seminar area throughout the weekend, is the current team Doctor to the Irish Rugby Team and another of the clinics speakers, Mr. Niall Hogan, is a former Irish Rugby Captain.

Last night the cream of the Irish physiotherapy community gathered at the Sports Surgery Clinic in Santry, North Dublin, to welcome some of the best known and celebrated figures in international sports medicine.
The stars of the clinic’s first Sports Medicine Symposium were Mr. David Baston, Director of Rehabilitation for the Abu Dhabi Knee & Sports Medicine Centre, Prof. Peter Brukner, Sports Physician and co-author of Clinical Sports Medicine, and Dr. Éanna Falvey, Sports Physician and Director of Sports Medicine at the clinic.
Over 150 guests enjoyed informative and engaging lectures from the trio of speakers, followed by practical workshops and demonstrations. The evening began with a lecture on innovation in the treatment of tendinopathies, presented by Dr. Éanna Falvey.
Prof. Brukner who works with the ‘Socceroos’ team spoke on the topic of groin pain. He later treated the audience to a fascinating demonstration of dry needling techniques for the gluteals and paraspinals, peppered with good natured insults following Ireland’s performance against the Socceroos on Wednesday night.
Mr. David Baston addressed the biomechanics of the knee and even managed to conjure a willing volunteer from the audience for a demonstration of rehabilitation and injury reduction techniques for the shoulder.
Questions came thick and fast from the audience and the panel of speakers addressed issues of practice; sending the audience away with useful tips and advice on the application of advanced techniques in physiotherapy.
As the evening drew to a close the guests and speakers relaxed and praised the excellent lectures and workshops over drinks in the atrium of the Sports Surgery Clinic. The clinic would like to thank Dr. Falvey, Mr. Baston and Prof. Brukner for giving so generously of their time and expertise. We look forward to hosting many future events as successful as the first SSC Sports Medicine Symposium; watch out for announcements on www.sportssurgeryclinic.com .
