Its remit is to protect the safety and welfare of researchers and research participants, and primarily to weigh the risks and benefits of individual research projects. One of the broad goals of this work can be stated simply as joint preservation. To this end a Musculoskeletal Tissue Regeneration Centre and a Surgical Training Centre have been established for residents, fellows, consultants and scientists. These facilities highlight the foresight and commitment that the SSC places on promoting future breakthroughs in orthopaedic surgery.

- [Patrick McCabe](https://www.sportssurgeryclinic.com/consultants/mr-patrick-mccabe/): Mr. Patrick McCabe is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic, Tallaght University Hospital and Naas General Hospital. Mr. McCabe graduated from the University College Dublin School of Medicine in 2015 having previously completed a Masters in Bioengineering at Trinity College Dublin. Patrick completed his Higher Specialist Training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and was awarded the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in trauma and orthopaedic surgery in 2023. Mr. McCabe completed international fellowships in hip and knee joint reconstruction, trauma surgery and complex hip and knee replacement and revision surgery at St Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto and subsequently at the Complex Arthroplasty Unit in St. Georges Hospital in London. Mr. McCabe’s subspecialty interests include both routine and complex hip and knee replacements, unicompartmental knee replacements, knee arthroscopy and robotic surgery.Mr. McCabe has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in orthopaedic and trauma surgery and has presented extensively at international conferences. Patrick is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (FRCSI), a member of the British and the European Bone and Joint Infection Societies (BAJIS) & (EBJIS) and a member of the Irish Institute for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery (IITOS).
- [Aine O’Gara](https://www.sportssurgeryclinic.com/consultants/aine-ogara/): Dr Aine O’Gara is a Consultant in Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia at St James’s Hospital, Dublin, where she provides comprehensive, patient-centred care for people with chronic and complex pain. Appointed to her consultant role in 2020, she combines expertise in both anaesthesia and pain medicine to deliver multimodal, evidence-based treatment plans, with a particular emphasis on interventional pain therapies.Dr O’Gara completed fellowship training in Pain Medicine and Trauma Anaesthesiology and has developed a special interest in spinal and musculoskeletal pain, as well as cancer-related pain. She has been a member of the Faculty of Pain Medicine since 2022 and serves as a Clinical Senior Lecturer with Trinity College Dublin. Her practice focuses on minimally invasive procedures, functional rehabilitation, and close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to optimise patients’ quality of life.

- [CT](https://www.sportssurgeryclinic.com/services/radiology/ct/): At UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic, we are committed to providing you with the most advanced and accurate diagnostic imaging technology available. A computerised Tomography (CT) scanner is a sophisticated machine that acquires images of the body using X-rays. Instead of sending out a single x-ray beam through your body as with ordinary X-Ray examinations, a fan-shaped beam of X-Rays passes through a slice of your body onto a bank of detectors where their strength is measured. Beams that have passed through less dense tissue such as the lungs will be stronger, whereas beams that have passed through denser tissue such as bone will be weaker. A powerful computer will use this information to work out the relative density of the tissues and the results are represented as a cross-sectional, two-dimensional picture shown on a monitor.Some examinations no preparation is required, though metal can interfere with the image quality, so everyone who has a scan is asked to remove metal objects such as coins, jewellery, and hair clips, and it's best to wear clothing that does not have metal zips or buttons. Depending on the type of scan patients may be asked to prepare for the scan in a particular way. We will let you know if this is the case at the time of booking the scan.Having a CT scan involves lying on a table that slides through the ‘ring' (or Gantry) of the scanner. The table is positioned so the part of the body being examined lies within the ring. The table moves through the gantry as the X-Ray source and the detectors rotate around inside. There will be a whirring noise caused by the moving parts of the scanner within the gantry. The radiographer operates the scanner from behind a window, and is able to see, hear and speak to the person being scanned throughout the procedure. During the scan the patient will be asked to keep very still and hold their breath for a few seconds. For some examinations, an injection of contrast agent (X-Ray dye) is needed to make organs and blood vessels easier to pick out. It is usually given into a vein in the arm or hand during the scan. The actual scanning itself takes a few seconds. You may need to be prepared, however, to wait from 10 minutes to an hour as most of the procedure time is in preparation and confirmation that the images are what your consultant needs. Once the examination is over most people can resume their normal activities immediately. The images we record will then be interpreted by a radiologist and the results will be sent to the doctor who arranged the scan.The CT scan itself does not have any physical side effects. However, if a contrast agent is used, in very rare cases, some people may be affected. As the dye is injected it can cause flushing of the complexion and sometimes a feeling of nausea. Some people feel warm and get a metallic taste in their mouth. These are normal sensations and pass within a few seconds.The only complications that may arise from a CT scan are related to the contrast agent. Again, very rarely a patient may have an allergic reaction to the dye. This can be treated immediately with appropriate medicines. Also, the dye can cause further kidney damage in people who already have kidney problems. People who have allergies or kidney problems should tell the CT department staff prior to the examination.CT technology requires the use of ionising radiation. There are known but slight risks to the foetus if exposed to ionising radiation, therefore if there is any chance that you could be pregnant, you will not be scanned.CT uses ionising radiation to generate images. Therefore, there is a dose of radiation involved. However, the purpose of this scan is to make the correct diagnosis, so you can get the appropriate treatment. Your doctor and the specialist in the Radiology Department have agreed that this benefit outweighs the risk from the radiation. Everyone receives some ionising radiation every day from naturally occurring radiation in the air and the food that we eat. It is a strength and conditioning intervention based on sound biomechanical and training principles that also addresses the complex psychology that is commonly seen with low back pain. Patient's will start with one-on-one sessions to address the issues relating to their low back pain and learn the exercises used in the programme. They will receive videos of these exercises to develop the correct techniques involved. Once ready, they will enter a 3 month training programme consisting of 3 training sessions per week. These can be performed either in their own gym or the Performance Rehabilitation Gym at SSC. When training at the clinic they will be able to attend up to 3 sessions per week all of which will be led by a strength and conditioning coach and physiotherapist. Sessions take place between 6-7pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Patients do not have to attend every session at the clinic but we would suggest that attending a supervised session at least once every 2 weeks is important. Prior to completing his MSc in physiotherapy in UL in 2021, he completed a bachelor's in biomedical engineering in NUIG. Currently he is completing a master's in research through RCSI, investigating the role of cervical focused treatment in concussion rehabilitation.
