Robert Piggott

Mr Piggott is a Trauma and Orthopaedics Consultant with a special interest in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.

Mr Piggott graduated from the National University of Ireland in Galway (NUIG) in 2010 and completed the Higher Surgical Training Programme in trauma and orthopaedics from 2015 to 2021. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Trauma & Orthopaedics) in 2020.

Mr Piggott has completed international fellowship training in all aspects of elective and traumatic shoulder and elbow surgery at the Sydney Shoulder Research Institute (SSRI) and the Upper Limb unit at Wrightington Hospital in the UK.

Mr Maurice O'Flaherty SSC

Maurice O’Flaherty

Mr Maurice O’Flaherty MSc (Sports Med) FRCSEd (Tr & Ortho) is a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising in Foot & Ankle Surgery, Trauma Surgery and Sports injuries.

He graduated in Medicine (MB BCh BaO) at Queens University Belfast in 2002, going on to follow a surgical career path, gaining a place on the Northern Ireland Orthopaedic Higher Surgical Training scheme in 2007. He obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (Trauma & Orthopaedics) in 2012 and went on to take up a place on the prestigious Surrey Foot and Ankle Fellowship in London.

Mr O’Flaherty has also graduated from the University of Bath, England, gaining a Masters of Science degree in Sports & Exercise Medicine. He spent time training with doctors and allied health professionals from all aspects of sport and exercise medicine, including Premier League Football and Rugby Union. He works with many high-level sportspersons including GAA players, Ulster Rugby, Ulster Hockey, NI Netball and Irish League Soccer.

He is a Consultant in the Royal Victoria Hospital and Musgrave Park Hospital Belfast, being a member of the on-call Trauma team in the former, which is a designated Major Trauma Centre. He is currently a certified Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor.

He was appointed Lead Clinician for Foot & Ankle Surgery in the Belfast Health & Social Care Trust in 2019.

Specialist interests include all aspects of complex foot and ankle problems including ankle instability and stabilisation, ankle arthroscopy (keyhole surgery), lower limb sports injuries and fractures, achilles tendon injuries and surgery, bunion (hallux valgus) surgery, lesser toe deformities, heel pain, tendon problems and foot and ankle arthritis.

Shea (James) O’Flanagan

Mr. Shea O’Flanagan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knee and upper limb surgery. He trained in Orthopaedic Surgery in Ireland, England, Hong Kong and Sweden. He has a wide experience in treating sports related injuries, degenerative conditions, post-traumatic conditions of the knee and upper limbs. His sub-special areas of interest include:

  • Shoulder Surgery: rotator cuff surgery including repair, the treatment of frozen shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis)
  • Hand Surgery: Carpal tunnel surgery including endoscopic carpal tunnel release, surgery for Dupuytren’s disease
  • Upper limb tendonitis
  • Knee surgery: He deals with meniscal tears including meniscal repair and total knee replacement.

Hannan Mullett Shoulder Specialist Santry

Hannan Mullett

Mr Mullett specialises in all types of shoulder surgery including arthroscopic reconstructive (keyhole) surgery. He has a particular interest in managing sports injuries such as shoulder instability (dislocations) and rotator cuff injuries. He routinely treats professional athletes and is active in research in optimising return to play. He performs a large volume of rotator cuff repair and shoulder replacement operations. He regularly lectures nationally and internationally and instructs on surgical training courses. He runs a shoulder fellowship training program and has trained fellows who now work all around the world.

Mr Mullett was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Shoulder specialist in 2005 and is an honorary senior lecturer at Royal College of Surgeons. He was one of the surgeons who developed the UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic. He has an interest in complex shoulder trauma and reconstructive surgery at Beaumont hospital. He runs the shoulder clinic at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Cappagh. His research team collaborate with R.C.S.I., U.C.D., and Trinity College.

Mr Mullett is actively involved in research and leads a research team involved in clinical and biomechanical research. He is also involved in research to improve outcomes following shoulder surgery particularly in return to play following athletic injuries. He has performed biomechanical research in conjunction with R.C.S.I., U.C.D., and Trinity College and has helped evaluate orthopaedic implants and techniques. He is also involved in designing orthopaedic implants. He lectures regularly both nationally and internationally. He has run a fellowship program since 2005 and has trained fellows who now practice shoulder surgery around the world.

Paul Moroney graduated from University College Dublin in 1997 and received specialist training on the Irish National Higher Surgical Training Scheme in Trauma & Orthopaedics. In 2008 he was awarded FRCS (Tr & Orth) and was entered in the Specialist Register of Orthopaedic Surgeons in 2010.

Andy Moriarity, MB BCh BAO, BSc (Hons), MD, FRCS (Tr & Orth) is an adult foot and ankle surgeon who specialises in minimally invasive surgery (MIS), degenerative conditions, sports injuries and arthroscopy.

Andy completed his undergraduate medical studies at University College Dublin and then a Medical Doctorate (MD) at Trinity College Dublin in 2014. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland in 2021 and graduated from the higher surgical training programme in Orthopaedic Surgery in 2022. He then completed the foot and ankle fellowship at Nottingham University, UK.

Returning to Ireland he began practicing as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in foot and ankle surgery. He currently works in both St James’s Hospital and Tallaght University Hospital.

Professor Cathal J Moran

Professor Cathal Moran is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic and the Professor and Chair of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. He specialises in Knee Surgery and Shoulder Surgery. His sub-specialty interest is in sports injuries, including ACL reconstruction, cartilage injury, meniscus surgery, rotator cuff repair and shoulder stabilisation surgery. He also performs Shoulder Replacement and Knee Replacement Surgery.
Professor Moran completed his training in the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Shoulder Fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery and Cornell Medical College in New York, the Cartilage Repair Centre at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and Antwerp Orthopaedic Centre in Belgium.  He has worked extensively with professional athletes and teams across Ireland, the US and Europe. He is a Principal Investigator at Trinity Centre for Bioengineering, RCSI Bioengineering and AMBER research centres, as well as a lead surgeon for SSC’s participation in international multi-centre clinical trials.
