Dr Frank O’ Leary qualified as a Consultant in Sports & Exercise medicine from the London higher speciality training programme in Sport & Exercise Medicine. He has recently returned from the UK to take up a consultant position in the UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic and to act as team doctor with Leinster Rugby. He is also the lead doctor with Irish athletics and Parasport in the Sport Ireland Institute.
Dr O’Leary graduated in medicine from University College Dublin in 2007. He subsequently completed the Trinity College Dublin General Practice training programme in 2012. He practiced as a GP with a special interest in Sports & Exercise Medicine while obtaining roles as Medical Officer with the Sport Ireland Institute and assistant programme director for the TCD/HSE Specialist training scheme in General Practice.
In 2019 Dr O’ Leary moved to the UK where he worked with in Rehabilitation Medicine before obtaining a place on the London Sports & Exercise Medicine Training programme in 2021.
Dr O’ Leary has extensive experience in elite and international sport as a team physician in rugby, athletics and football. He has previously worked as team doctor to the Ireland Women’s rugby team from 2017 to 2019, team doctor to London Irish RFC in 2022 and also acted as independent match day doctor for the European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) Competitions. He has acted as Chief Medical Officer to Team Ireland at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Azerbaijan in 2019 and was a member of the Team Ireland medical support for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics for the Marathon and race walkers. Dr O’ Leary has acted as Team doctor to Tottenham Hotspur FC Youth teams in 2023.
Dr O’Leary is qualified in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound with post graduate qualifications from the University of East London and AECC University in Bournemouth. He performs targeted Ultrasound Guided musculoskeletal injections.
