Dr Valerie Hayes is a Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine, based at our Sports Medicine Department in UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic.

Dr Hayes graduated with a degree in medicine from University College Dublin in 2007. She completed 4 years of post-graduate training in General Practice through the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland GP training scheme in 2014. She worked in General Practice for many years while pursuing further interests in Sports Medicine and Women’s Health.
She completed the International Olympic Committee Diploma in Sports Medicine in 2016. In 2023, Dr Hayes graduated with a Masters in Sports and Exercise Medicine from University College Cork and commenced higher specialist training in Sports and Exercise Medicine, graduating in 2025. She is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine in Ireland.
Dr Hayes works in the Sport Ireland Institute, as lead doctor for the Irish Boxing, Swimming and Cycling teams. She worked as Medical Officer to Team Ireland at the European Games in Krakow and the Olympic Games in Paris. She was team doctor for Team Ireland at the European Boxing Championships in Belgrade in 2024.
Dr Hayes is doctor to the Women’s Under 18 and Under 20’s National Rugby teams and has travelled as team doctor to Six Nations festivals abroad. She is part of the match day medical team at Men’s and Women’s Senior International rugby matches.
Dr Hayes has been a member of Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team since 2018 and also provides medical cover for their fundraising events.
