Med in Ireland 2009 took place on Tuesday 20th October. Croke Park was the appropriate setting for this showcase of Irish talent in the medical and technical arena as exhibitors met with international guests. The conference was declared open by the Minister for Trade and Commerce, Mr. Billy Kelleher. The Minister congratulated the organizers, Enterprise Ireland whose responsibility it is to “continually break down barriers innovating technology and innovating ideas”.
The event featured a series of lectures covering topics such as building start up companies, the challenges of launching innovative products and translating research to the patient. Professor Kevin Mulhall delivered a fascinating speech on “Building Orthopaedic Research Excellence” and received a warm reception from the audience who raised concerns regarding the exchange of knowledge and resource support for research in medical technology.
The presence of invited guests from Europe, the US and the Asia Pacific regions ensured that Irish companies and their products and services were on display for the world to admire. As the Minister put it; “We can talk among ourselves as a community (in Ireland) but it is important to showcase ourselves internationally. We are well capable of competing with the best in the world.”
