He has a particular interest in sporting injuries including anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, meniscal repair, cartilage restoration procedures, multi-ligamentous knee reconstruction and hamstring repair. In addition, he cares for patients with degenerative conditions, such as knee arthritis, and performs partial and total knee replacements and total hip replacements.

Brian completed his medical school training at University College Dublin, Ireland, and carried out his specialist training in Trauma & Orthopaedics at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He also achieved a Masters in Sports and Exercise Medicine. Brian chose to pursue a career in academic orthopaedic sports surgery, and carried out three years of fellowship training. The first year was a research fellowship at the Steadman Philippon Research Institute. He then carried out a clinical fellowship at the University of Toronto in sports surgery. Finally, he completed two clinical fellowships in Melbourne; the first was a knee reconstruction fellowship at OrthoSport Victoria (OSV) and the second a fellowship at Hip Arthroscopy Australia. Following his fellowship, Brian worked as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at OSV and Epworth Healthcare.

Brian has a keen interest in research and is Full Professor and Chair of Orthopaedics and Surgical Biomechanics at Dublin City University. Ruth Delaney 13720

Ruth Delaney

Ms. Ruth Delaney is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and shoulder specialist. Ms. Delaney specialises in the full range of shoulder surgery, including open and arthroscopic procedures.

Her sub specialist areas of interest include shoulder instability and shoulder replacement surgery. She also maintains an active academic role, teaching visiting fellows and medical students on elective rotations, as well as teaching shoulder courses internationally, and is a reviewer for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. Ms. Delaney founded the Irish Shoulder Fellowship programme, which began taking international fellows in 2018.

After spending her initial postgraduate years in Cork, Ms. Delaney joined the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program, where she underwent a comprehensive training in all aspects of orthopaedic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and the other Harvard-affiliated hospitals.

During her time in Boston, Ms. Delaney had the opportunity to complement her Masters degree in sports and exercise medicine with direct experience of professional sports teams such as the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. She maintains her interest in care of athletes and sports injuries as a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine in Ireland and as shoulder consultant to Munster Rugby.

Shortly before the end of her orthopaedic training, Ms. Delaney was a chief resident on the orthopaedic trauma service at the time of the tragic events of the 2013 Boston marathon bombings. In 2014, she ran the Boston marathon to honour the victims and her patients, as well as to raise money for the MGH emergency response fund.

Following general orthopaedic training, Ms. Delaney completed her specialist shoulder training at the Harvard Shoulder Fellowship in Boston as well as in France, under the guidance of Drs. JP Warner, Gilles Walch and Laurent Lafosse. This international training afforded her opportunities to work with world-class surgeons at the top of their field in areas such as shoulder replacement, instability surgery and complex arthroscopic surgery.

Ms. Delaney is an active researcher, and in 2014 won the premier research award in shoulder surgery, the Neer Award, for work on shoulder instability surgery.

In 2015, Ms. Delaney was invited to become a reviewer for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, the leading journal worldwide for specialist shoulder surgery. In October 2016, she was admitted as a member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, the foremost shoulder surgery organisation in the world.

Ms. Delaney became an Assistant Clinical Professor at University College Dublin in 2017 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2020.

In 2018, Ms. Delaney founded the Dublin Shoulder Institute.

In 2020, Ms. Delaney was appointed an Associate Editor for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery – Seminars in Arthroplasty. As of January 2021, she also serves on the International Advisory Board of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. She has also been appointed Deputy Editor, Research, Shoulder & Elbow of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS) in 2021.

She is regularly invited to teach and lecture at shoulder courses and conferences all over the world.

Having represented Munster in four different sports and played tennis at international level, Ruth has a personal understanding of athletes and people who wish to stay active at all levels, and she brings this perspective to her treatment of patients with shoulder problems.

Procedures that Ms. Delaney commonly performs include:
• Arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery
• Rotator cuff repair
• Shoulder stabilisation/labral repair (Bankart procedure)
• Coracoid transfer procedure (Latarjet procedure)
• Shoulder replacement surgery
• Reverse shoulder replacement

WEB Mr Gary Colleary COnsultant Orthopaedic Surgeon SSC

Gary Colleary

Mr Gary Colleary, MB BCh BAO, PhD, FRCS (Tr & Orth) is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at The Royal Victoria Hospital and Musgrave Park Hospital. He specialises in all aspects of Foot and Ankle Surgery and he also continues to undertake Trauma work as member of the on-call Trauma Team at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Gary’s developed his interest in Foot and Ankle surgery early on in his surgical training and has completed a specialist fellowship in Foot and Ankle surgery in Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge under the guidance of Mr. Fred Robinson.

Gary completed his Medical Degree at The Queens University Belfast graduating in 1996, and completed his specialist orthopaedic training on the Northern Ireland Orthopaedic Higher Surgical Training Scheme. During this time Gary completed a PhD involving 3 years full time research into the effects of the newer biologic Rheumatoid Arthritis treatments on bone density and fracture healing. In 2009 Gary moved to Cambridge to undertake his Fellowship training. Following this Fellowship period Gary was offered a Consultants Foot and Ankle Surgeon position at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, the major teaching hospital in East Anglia. During this time he advanced his training in sports injuries having treated players from Norwich City soccer team.

Gary returned to Northern Ireland in 2012 where he has continued to advance his practice over the intervening period. As well as having an ongoing interest in general trauma focusing on complex foot and ankle injuries, his elective practice is focused on treatment of all conditions of the foot and ankle, including sports injuries, arthritis of the foot and ankle, bunions and other toe deformities and Achilles tendon or plantar fascial heel pain. He performs both open and arthroscopic (Keyhole) procedures as appropriate.

He also has a keen interest Diabetic Foot conditions and is currently working as part of a team to develop a Northern Ireland Multi Disciplinary Service to improve the treatment of patients with foot conditions arising from diabetes including ulcers and infections or bony collapse of the foot caused by Charcot arthropathy. Gary firmly believes that the proper early intervention and care of these conditions can prevent longer term major consequences for diabetic patients.

He regularly teaches undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and lectures to General Practictioners, Podiatrists and Physiotherapists. Gary is married with two teenage children, he enjoys golf, soccer and walking Molly the dog.
